Izhevsk Mechanical Institute was founded following the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR No 1034 dated February 22, 1952. The first enrollment included 200 students. The Institute comprised Mechanical (special) and Mechanical and Technological Faculties. The first Rector (Director) of the Institute was Vladimir Pavlovich Ostroumov, PhD, Professor (the former Dean of a faculty at Moscow Higher Technical School (MHTS), Head of one of the oldest Departments – Technology of Metals and Metal Science).
The Institute was situated in building 79 on Gorky Street. The first bell was given for 100 freshmen by Nikolay Vasilyevich Vorobyov, DSc, Professor (a former professor of MHTS). The studies were conducted in three specialties.
In the beginning the Institute mainly used the potential of Bauman MHTS, which had experience in educating engineers in Izhevsk (evacuation during the Great Patriotic War), and facilities of enterprises of the Republic.
The library funds started to get formed. The major sources of replenishment were gifts from different institute libraries of the country (Moscow Aviation Institute, Bauman MHTS, Moscow Auto Mechanical Institute, Kazan Aviation Institute). Today the library funds comprise over 800 thousand volumes; the library receives about 1,000 readers annually.
Radio center was organized. At first it broadcasted announcements and music, then radio newspaper and its own radio programs appeared.
Primary Voluntary Association for Assistance to Army, Air Force and Navy was organized.
The first IMI Spartakiad took place.
Construction of Hostel No 1 started in Metallurg District.
Military Department was organized.
Pre-study courses were organized under the supervision of Boris Vladimirovich Saushkin, graduate of MHTS.
The first meeting of Student Scientific Society took place.
Trade union of IMI was founded, the elections of the first trade union committee were carried out.
Rehearsals of the Jazz Dance Orchestra of IMI started under the direction of G.I. Vlasov (currently “Big Band of ISTU”).
The first Student Scientific Conference took place. By that time 55 students worked at 5 sections.
The independent Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was established, which also carried out training in instrumentation engineering (until 1961).
The laboratory of nuts and bolts of small arms was organized, now it is often referred to as the Museum of Small Arms.
Preparatory Department was organized for working youth from cities and villages and ex-servicemen to restore the knowledge of school curriculum to make it easier for them to enter IMI and adapt to first years of studies at the Institute.
The first track-and-field race was carried out in Kirov park, which then became a tradition.
Post graduate courses were opened.
The first economic contract in the history of the Institute was signed to carry out scientific and research work, which laid the foundation for all scientific work of the Institute.
The first graduation of 106 reserve officers took place at the Military Department.
Evening courses were developed at IMI, where workers of Izhevsk enterprises were educated (149 students from Moto Plant alone).
In summer the first student working team set off for a “New Land” (150 students).
The first division in the history of the Institute was created to fight against troublemakers.
The first diploma defense was carried out by mechanical engineers specializing in mechanical engineering technology, metal-cutting machines and tools.
IMI was appointed as a curator of the orphanage in Nylga village that was evacuated during the 2nd World War from the blockaded Leningrad.
Votkinsk Branch of IMI Faculty of Evening Courses was opened on the basis of Study Support Center of All-Union Extramural Machine-Building Institute and Votkinsk Machine-Building Technical School; 75 students specializing in mechanical engineering technology, metal-cutting machines and tools were enrolled.
The Department of Instrumentation Engineering was founded, which became the basis of independent Faculty of Instrumentation Engineering in 1961.
At the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League meeting the idea came up to build a stadium by the efforts of students.
The Faculty of Instrumentation Engineering was organized by uniting the Departments of Computing Machines, Electrical Engineering and Physics.
The Department of Computer Engineering opened a computer center with the first universal electronic lamp computing machine “Minsk-1” (the first computing machine in the city).
Study Support Center of the Ural Polytechnic Institute in Glazov was brought under control of the Institute and in 1992 became its branch.
Skills Update Courses for engineering and technical personnel were organized at the Institute. They included the School for Managers, Primary School of Management and School for Newly Qualified Engineers.
Construction of the Academic and Laboratory Building in Metallurg District was completed (currently academic building № 2), future campus territory was defined (currently Studencheskaya Street).
The evening branch of IMI was opened in the city of Sarapul on the basis of Study Support Center of IMI.
Applied research laboratory on the problems of durability and economic efficiency of machines of the Ministry for Machine-Building and Tool-Making Industry was opened. From 1968 till 1992 it was the only forging laboratory in the country; the laboratory was able to produce unique automation and mechanization systems with servo drives and program control systems for forging and press forming segments.
Scientific Research Laboratory was organized (SRL, originally it was called Special Purpose Scientific Research Laboratory).
The Patent Information Department of IMI was founded (from 1996 till 1999 it did not function, and was opened again in 2000).
The Operational Komsomol Brigade was organized.
Nikolay Vasilyevich Talantov, DSc, Professor, was appointed the Rector of IMI.
Stadium “Burevestnik” of IMI was solemnly opened. In those years it was the best track-and-field facility in Udmurtia, the only stadium that belonged to an institute; the newspaper “Komsomolskaya Pravda” called it “Izhevsk Luzhniki”.
Debut of IMI team in the Club for the Lightheaded and Quick-Witted (Valery Panagushin, Veniamin Goldfarb, Viktor Kosenko and others).
The Faculty of Engineering and Economics of IMI was established.
The shortwave radio station of IMI was organized at the initiative of A. Okhotnikov and N. Osipov, sportsmen of Izhevsk Radio Club of Primary Voluntary Association for Assistance to Army, Air Force and Navy who were bronze medalists of the USSR championship in shortwave radio communication.
The construction of the boat station started.
The beginning of construction of the sports camp of IMI on the Kama river near the village Galevo. The first team of workers comprised 120 students and 16 lecturers.
In autumn the first carnival party of applicants and students took place (currently it is the Freshmen Welcome Party).
The first issue of the Institute newspaper “Mechanic” was released. The newspaper was published twice a month.
Votkinsk Branch of the evening faculty of IMI was transformed into Votkinsk Branch of the Institute.
Sports and recreation camp on the Kama river opened its first season.
The first student working team in the Republic was organized at IMI. Students of the team helped to build Yanaul-Chad railroad.
Scientific Research Laboratory on automatic machines was organized.
The formation of scientific schools was in progress at IMI; first generation of students of the schools defended their graduation projects.
The beginning of construction of the shooting gallery under the academic building in Metallurg District (currently academic building No 2).
The construction of the boat station was completed.
Historical walk of the Komsomol members of IMI to the battlefields of the 753-artillery regiment. Such historical walks to the places of battle and labor glory of Soviet people became a tradition. In the first half of the 1970-s groups of Komsomol members walked the roads of Udmurtia, went to the Kursk Salient, to Karelia, Volgograd and Velikie Luki.
The Institute took part in the Spartakiad “Friendship” for Institutes from Ural and Siberia . Teams from 12 technical institutes from Ural and Siberia participated in the event.
The student working team from Udmurtia went to KAMAZ factory to help improve the settlement of factory workers. They also built the road for the factory. The team disbursed about 204 thousand rubles.
Nikolay Alexandrovich Karpunin, DSc was appointed the Rector of IMI.
Undergraduate program in Industrial and Civil Engineering was opened at the Faculty of Engineering and Economics. It laid the foundation for the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
Undergraduate program in Agricultural Building was opened. After that the Faculty of Civil Engineering became independent.
18 institutes of the USSR took part in the Inter-Institute Spartakiad “Friendship”.
Alexey Matveevich Lipanov, DSc (currently member of the Russian Academy of Science) was appointed the Rector of IMI.
The room of honor dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War was opened at the Institute.
The first official performance of the Student Theater of Skits was held at the Institute. Afterwards the theater was called IzhMechSmekh (“smekh” is the Russian word for “laughter”).
It was a record year in academic achievements at IMI: absolute academic progress at the Faculty of Instrumentation Engineering was 99.3%; 14 straight-A students!
The specialized council on PhD defense was opened at IMI. In several years 3 more councils were opened.
Student working teams took part in the competition for the right to be named after the 25th anniversary of IMI.
The first track-and-field student race in commemoration of the Victory Day was held along the route: Izhevsk-Ulyanovsk. The tradition of track-and-field races to the hero cities of the USSR continued till 1982. Then it revived in 2003.

A unique student working team CSB (Communist Shock Brigade) was organized at the Faculty of Civil Engineering. All the money earned by the team was sent to the orphanage in Nylga.
The results of students’ academic and research work achieved success at the All-Union Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy.
79 participants of the exhibition from IMI received diplomas and medals.
The construction of the Students Palace “Integral” was completed.
The Student Theater of Skits “IzhMechSmekh” was awarded the title of the People’s Theater. The director of the theater was Evgeny Stolov.
The concert of Nikolay Gutorovich, graduate of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, singer, Honored Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, took place in the Student Palace “Integral”.
Russian national exhibition “Automation and Mechanization in Machine-Building, Metallurgy and Construction” was held at the Institute for the first time. 42 institutes and one branch from 35 cities of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic took part in it; among the participants were 20 polytechnic institutes. 269 exhibits were presented there, 33 exhibits were from IMI, 18 of them were introduced in industry and allowed saving 3.6 million rubles.
When analyzing the results of Machine-Building, Metallurgy and Construction sections of the exhibition, the jury gave the first places to Izhevsk Mechanical Institute and Perm Polytechnic Institute. They were granted the first-class diplomas.
“IzhMechSmekh” received the Grand Prize of the magazine “Student Meridian” at the All-Union Festival of Student Theaters of Skits in the city of Donetsk.
Under the supervision of V.M. Zlatkis, the Department of Computer Engineering started an active development and application of vision systems at different enterprises of Udmurtia and other regions of the country.
Oleg Ivanovich Shavrin, DSc, Professor, became the Rector of IMI.
Health and Recreation Center was opened (fully equipped in 1984).
The Patent Department and Foundation for Description of Inventions in all spheres of technology were organized to promote scientific researches and stimulate development of inventions. The Foundation became the largest in the Republic.
The first specialized council on doctoral dissertation defense was opened at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. It increased the number of PhDs and Doctors of Science dramatically. In the 1990-s the number of doctoral councils at the Institute increased sharply. Today ISTU has 6 doctoral councils and one PhD council.
Section A of the third academic building was opened; canteen storage units and an apartment building were ready for exploitation.
IMI was appointed the major institute of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic for the Organization of Special-Purpose and Intensive Training of Specialists for defense enterprises specializing in Mechanical and Instrumentation Engineering.
Faculty of Robotics was established on the basis of Mechanical-Technological Faculty. It fitted the new line of machine-building development.
Due to the fact that the city name was changed from Izhevsk to Ustinov, Izhevsk Mechanical Institute was renamed into Ustinov Mechanical Institute.
The road and shooting gallery were opened to test small arms (after tragic events in 1991 the shooting gallery was closed).
The branch of the Department of Manufacturing of Machines and Mechanisms was opened at Scientific and Research Institution of Technology “Progress”. It was the first branch of the department in the framework of the Program of Special-Purpose and Intensive Training of Specialists.
For students’ achievements in scientific and research work, the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR requested IMI to organize and host the All-Union Exhibition of Scientific and Technical Creativity of the Youth – XI and All-Union Contest “Student and Technological Progress – 86”.
The construction of the 2nd academic building and an attachment to the ski depot were completed. The sports center with two gyms was opened in the 3rd academic building.
After Chernobyl accident, the team from IMI together with factory “Izhmash”, SRIT “Progress” and Sarapul Electric Generator Plant managed to create within a week a radio-controlled cart to place a robot for collecting radioactive debris of granite.
Workers of IMI as members of the Commission on Acceptance Tests took part in the expedition to the Equator (the Indian Ocean, weather ship “Musson”) with prototypes of nonstandard equipment developed by designers of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering for the National Committee on Hydrometeorology.
The cross country ski race called “Sport is the Ambassador for Peace” took place. The participants of the race gave 13 lectures, carried out career orientation work in 6 village schools, gave 10 concerts and 3 workshops on organization of sports activities, organized 3 ski competitions for pupils and 7 games in volleyball and basketball. The team covered about 90 kilometers.
As the name of the city was changed back, Ustinov Mechanical Institute returned its name – Izhevsk Mechanical Institute.
Ivan Vasilyevich Abramov, DSc, Professor, was elected the Rector of IMI.
The Faculty of Economics was closed and the Faculty of Engineering Cybernetics and Computer Science was established.
Developers of a scientific topic in the sphere of Information and Measuring Systems in Science and Industry from the Department of Computer Engineering (Y.V. Verkienko, V.S. Kazakov, A.D. Savinykh, K.Yu. Petukhov) were awarded S.I. Mosin prize.
Students of the Faculty of Robotics worked one shift at the car factory and sent all the money they earned to the foundation organized for the construction of the Monument to Peacekeeping Soldiers in Izhevsk.
Graduates of the Institute made a long-distance journey in a hand-made yacht of Flint Class along the route Rostov-on-Don – Azov – Taganrog – Mariupol – Kerch – Feodosia.
The Academic Department on the Methods of Testing of Heat Machines was opened under the guidance of Yu.V. Verkienko, DSc, Prof., together with the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Ural Division of the Russian Academy of Science. The Department designed an optical electronic simulator for collective fight that was accepted by the Russian Army.
The first season of Republic competition for Student Theater Skits “Balda” was completed.
The Faculty of Management and Marketing was established.
The theater “IzhMechSmekh” acquired the status of the municipal theater “A Young Man”.
Following the results of the Institute evaluation, Izhevsk Mechanical Institute acquired the status of a technical university and became Izhevsk State Technical University – ISTU (Order of the Chairman of the State Committee of the Russian Federation on Higher Education No 484 dated 22.12.1993).
The Doctoral School was opened at the University combining 4 scientific fields and 16 specialties.
The first foreign delegation visited ISTU (beginning of cooperation with German universities).
The Faculty of Computer Science was established on the basis of ECCS Faculty.
The University passed State Accreditation.
The Academic Senate introduced the title of the Honorary Professor of Izhevsk State Technical University (equivalent to Doctor Honoris Causa). The first Honorary Professors of ISTU became I.V. Abramov, V.I. Goldfarb, M.T. Kalashnikov, A.A. Konovalov, A.M. Lipanov, V.I. Kazachenok, O.I. Shavrin, N.V. Azbelev. 44 people have been awarded the title so far including 13 foreign representatives.
The Publishing House of ISTU was founded on the basis of Editorial Department and Copy Center.
The Scientific and Research Centre for Intelligent Radiosystems was organized at the Department of Radio Engineering, which later was transformed into Radio Engineering Design Office that was a structural subdivision of Sarapul Radio Plant.
The Institute of Mechanics was organized under the supervision of Veniamin Iosifovich Goldfarb on the basis of student design office.
The Faculty of Humanities was established.
The Regional Representation of the Center for Testing of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation was opened to organize and conduct centralized testing of pupils and applicants in Udmurtia.
The Preparatory Faculty was organized (in 1999 it was transformed into the Institute of Academic Communications), which became one of the acknowledged leaders in working with high school pupils and students of continuous vocational education and secondary vocational education.
Museums of Radio Electronics and Computer Science were organized.
Programmers of ISTU took part in International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) under the auspices of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
The Faculty of Professional Pedagogics was established (in 2008 it was affiliated with the Faculty of Economics, Law and Humanities).
The International Office was organized to coordinate international cooperation.
The first international Agreement of Cooperation was signed between ISTU and University of Pecs, Hungary.

The first issue of theoretical journal “Vestnik of Izhevsk State Technical University” was released (today the journal is on the list of leading reviewed journals, as well as on the list of Higher Attestation Commission (VAK), and is included into the Russian Scientific Citation Index).

University workers received M.T. Kalashnikov State Award of the Udmurt Republic (L.A. Galagan, V.N. Ezhov, Y.A. Sadilov, I.V. Ishmulin) for designing multimedia presentations about AK-47.
The Regional Representation of the Center for Testing took part in the All-Russian experiment on implementation of the Uniform State Exam for 11-grade students of high schools in Udmurtia.
The publishing of the newspaper “Mechanik” was resumed (stopped in 1989).
The Faculty of Advertising and Design was established.
The Faculty of Teachers’ Qualification Update was established.
The Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation registered 18 leading educational research teams of ISTU that conduct fundamental researches.

Scientists of ISTU (M.M. Gorokhov and I.G. Rysyak) were granted the State Award of the Udmurt Republic in the sphere of science and technology for a number of works in the field of energy efficiency.
Vocal Jazz Studio “Rec.time” was organized by Larisa and Alexey Pismerov, Honored Cultural Workers of the Udmurt Republic.
The first international track-and-field race along the route Izhevsk-Minsk took place at the initiative of the rectors of ISTU (Izhevsk) and BNTU (Minsk).
ISTU was among the first universities that signed the Magna Charta Universitatum in Bologna (Italy) and became a participant of the Bologna Process.
The Faculty of Robotics was transformed into the Faculty of Advanced Technologies and Automobiles.
The Faculty of Humanities was transformed into the Faculty of Economics, Law and Humanities.
The Department of Organizational and Educational Work with Students was established to train scientific and technical intellectuals, active people with creative minds who are adjusted to the present-day life situations.
Grant competition was held for postgraduate and undergraduate students. The competition was dedicated to the 100thanniversary of V.P. Ostroumov, who was the first rector of IMI.
For the first time, Izhevsk Radio Plant gave special grant n.a. Valery Agafangelovich Shutov (former Director General of the plant (1978-1992), Honorary Citizen of Izhevsk) to the students of ISTU who achieved outstanding results in scientific and academic work. The Shutov Award is given to the best students twice a year.
The Forum “Education Quality-2004” (EQ-2004) was held. The First International Conference “Technical Universities: Integration with European and World Systems of Education” was organized in the framework of the Forum. The event is regularly held every two years.
For the first time, the traditional student volleyball tournament in the memory of Yury Mineevich Merzlyakov (1947-2003) was organized; he was one of the most favorite and popular leaders in the history of the University.
Student Law-Enforcement Unit “Rys” was established at the initiative of students and Security Department of ISTU.
At the meeting of European University Association in Brussels the decision was made on full individual membership of ISTU in EUA. ISTU became the 11th university of Russia to receive such honor.
The first forum of undergraduate and postgraduate students of ISTU took place. Representatives of faculties, members of student work teams and student hostel councils as well as students’ and lecturers’ trade union took part in the forum.
The rector’s reception for straight-A students was held, now the reception is held annually and is called “Student of the Year”.
ISTU was accredited by the Federal Space Agency (Roskosmos) and received the right to conduct works connected with space activity (information processing and development of specialized software).
Egyptian-Russian University (ERU) was opened near Cairo in Badr city. Russian members of the Board of Founders of ERU were I.V. Abramov (then rector of ISTU) and M.T. Kalashnikov (small arms designer and an Honorary Professor of ISTU).
The Educational and Testing Center of Russian as a Foreign Language was opened; it is accredited to test foreign nationals and issue certificates to obtain Russian citizenship.
The Postgraduate Department was established.
Team of designers of the technology of bimetallic command parts for specialty vehicles (academician A.M. Lipanov, and scientists of ISTU S.D. Solovyov, PhD and O.I. Shavrin, DSc) were granted M.T. Kalashnikov Award.
V.M. Verzhbitsky, a lecturer of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, received the State Award of the Udmurt Republic in the field of literature, art and education.
The outdoor museum was opened next to the 2nd academic building of ISTU: six samples of large-caliber guns (D-20 152-mm howitzer-gun, M-46 130-mm towed gun, M-30 122-mm howitzer, D-48 85-mm anti-tank gun, S-60 57-mm anti-aircraft gun, D-30 122-mm howitzer) are exhibited.
The University switched to the system of preparing graduation projects on a contractual basis: 58 departments of ISTU formed a set of orders of employers to make scientific and research diploma projects for their enterprises.
The first festival of student guitar poetry “Singers of GaleWood” took place in the Sports and Recreation Camp of ISTU “Galevo”.
The Laboratory of Technical Physics n.a. Yu.M. Merzlyakov was opened. He made a great contribution to the humanitarization of education at the Institute, transformation of IMI into a technical university and organization of bachelor studies. The Faculty of Instrumentation Engineering prepared medals named after Yu.M. Merzlyakov “For Academic Achievements and Active Participation in Public Life” and for “Scientific Contribution”.
ISTU took the first place in the Republic competition in organization of educational work at higher educational institutions of Udmurtia.
Boris Anatolyevich Yakimovich, DSc, Professor, was elected the Rector of ISTU.
The team of ISTU programmers took the first place at the XI Ural Team Student Championship in programming.
The construction of the Business Incubator for undergraduate and postgraduate students and researchers was completed (with the total area of 1000 sq.m. it can accommodate about 20 project-enterprises). The project of the innovative Business Incubator is one of the winners of the national competition in such projects among 40 Russian universities.
The reconstruction of the football field at Stadium “Burevestnik” was completed. An agreement with the Russian Football Union was signed to create an interregional sports center of junior football at ISTU.
The 3rd round of All-Russian Student Olympiad on Mechanism and Machine Science was held.
The first competition in student video films “SKIF” was arranged.
Six bachelor and one master study programs of ISTU were accredited by the Central Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (ZEvA) ( Hannover, Germany). According to the evaluation results, the Permanent Accreditation Commission of ZEvA made a conclusion that all evaluated programs meet the European standards. All students who are educated on these programs can receive the European Diploma Supplement with their diploma on higher education.
Scientists of ISTU (V.I. Goldfarb, E.S Trubachev., D.P. Gromov, A.S. Kuznetsov) were awarded the State Prize of the Udmurt Republic in Science and Technology for designing and mastering a new range of import substitution reduction gearboxes of new generation for oil and gas, chemical and power industries.
ISTU becomes a member of the Russian Public Organization “Union of Russian Mechanical Engineers”. Workers, lecturers and students of the university join this organization annually.
ISTU team won golden medals at the International Collegiate Programming Contest ACM-2008 in the city of Banff, province Alberta , Canada .
The first workshop-olympiad in programming was organized and held together with Lomonosov Moscow State University.
The first All-Russian meeting on the Problems of the State Plan Realization in Training of Personnel for the Enterprises of Defense Industry Complex was held. The participants of the meeting were the rectors of the most respected institutes of higher education from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, Perm, Samara, Krasnoyarsk and managers and representatives of large enterprises of Russia .
The government order system for applicants of defense specialties was implemented.
The memorial plaque was put up in the 2nd building of ISTU in commemoration of Alexey Afanasievich Konovalov, one of the first Doctors of Science at IMI, Professor, member of Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of IMI (1989-1994), famous scientist in the field of ballistics.
The scientific-methodological center of Russian Biathlon Union was opened at the Faculty of Sports of ISTU.
The first masters graduated from ISTU (131 people). The University offered 15 master programs.
The Scientific Conference-Workshop “Control Theory and Mathematical Modeling” (IMS-2008) was held. The conference was dedicated to Nikolay Viktorovich Azbelev, DSc, Prof., Honorary Professor of ISTU.
ISTU volleyball team, the champion among university teams of Privolzhsky Federal District, was invited by “Russian Sports Association” in Sidney to participate in the traditional “Russian Volleyball Tournament” in Australia. The sportsmen from Izhevsk won the first place of the tournament; they also met in an exhibition game with the select team of University of Sydney and Sydney State University of Technology.
The Faculty of Postgraduate Studies and Additional Professional Education was accredited by the Ministry of Housing and Building of Udmurtia and received the right to conduct professional update courses for the specialists of the Udmurt Republic in the framework of Self-Regulatory Organizations of Federal and Republican level.
The memorial plaque was opened at ISTU in commemoration of Mikhail Semenovich Gorokhov, DSc, Professor, honorary member of Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences, classic of internal ballistics.
The All-Russian Scientific and Technical Conference “Phenomenon of M.T. Kalashnikov – Fusion of Science and Industry” dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the designer was held. The room n.a. Kalashnikov was opened in the scientific library of ISTU.
ISTU became a member of the Association “Privolznsky Cluster University of Automobile Industry” which unites seven universities of Privolzhsky Federal District.
Academic-laboratory building of ISTU No 5 was solemnly opened.
The team of students and young scientists of ISTU under the supervision of G.V. Lomaev, DSc (Department of Instruments and Techniques of Quality Control) won a 6 million ruble grant at the competition of the Foundation for the Promotion of the Development of Small Businesses in the Sphere of Science and Technology (under the auspices of Ivan Bortnik).
One of the largest Voluntary Associations for Assistance to Army, Aviation and Fleet was revived.
The Center for Innovative Humanitarian Programs was founded and the showroom “Rakurs” was opened.
El’Manuscript-09-WS International Scientific School for the Youth was held. The participants of the school were the leading scientists and students from Russia, Germany, France, the USA, Canada, Bulgaria and Norway.
The local television for the first time broadcasted weekly news program “Studencheskaya, 7”, made by the team of university television from the Department of Public Relations of ISTU.
The first two-day open Hot-Jazz Marathon was held, which later became a tradition. It is a jazz festival with participants from Izhevsk and many other cities of Russia.
The first Innovative Convent of Young Scientists, Innovators and Specialists of Udmurtia took place. The participants of the Convent were young scientists of Izhevsk State Technical University, Izhevsk State Medical Academy, Izhevsk State Agricultural Academy and Udmurt State University.
The Center of Czech language and Culture was officially opened. It was established together with South Moravian Centre for International Mobility (Jihomoravske centrum pro mezinarodni mobilitu, JCMM). Classes are conducted by lecturers from the Czech Republic. The Center offers courses not only for students of ISTU but also for students of other universities of the Republic.
Scientists of ISTU (B.A. Yakimovich, Yu.O. Mikhailov, N.A. Koryakin) were awarded the State Prize of the Udmurt Republic in the Sphere of Science and Technology for the development of advanced technologies and mastering of production of rocket bodies. The team also became laureates of “Golden Idea” prize for “Achievements in the Field of Military Goods Production and Application of the State-of-the-Art Technologies”.
A specialized workshop for the professional development of managers of editorial and publishing departments “Present-Day Problems of University Book Publishing” was arranged together with Ivan Fedorov State University of Printing Arts in Moscow. The results of the third interregional “University Book” Competition were announced.
Andrey Gumennikov, a master student, became a laureate of the Russian Competition in the best student scientific works for “Energy Efficiency Technologies”. He was awarded a medal of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation “For the Best Scientific Work”.
47th Spartakiad “Friendship” of Ural universities was held at ISTU.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was opened on the basis of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics.
The Council of Young Scientists of ISTU was established at the scientific and technological conference of PhD students, master students and young scientists.
I Student International Olympiad on Mechanism and Machine Science was arranged at ISTU following the decision of International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM); it was the first Olympiad of international level in the history of this Federation.
ISTU hosted Russian Volleyball Championship (male teams of the First League).
The first lecture rooms n.a. industrial enterprises were opened at ISTU: V.S. Chuguevsky (Izhevsk Mechanical Plant) and NPO “Computer”.
The Collective Research Center of Innovative Technologies in Material Processing was opened at ISTU. Experts say that it is the unique and the only center for nonmetallic material processing in Volga region. The center has modern high-tech equipment – CNC machines for wood processing, fusing furnaces (glass processing).
The first youth forum of collegiate intellectual competitions in innovations “Young Generation – 2011” was arranged. More than 80 undergraduate and postgraduate students, young scientists from universities of the Republic and specialists from Izhevsk enterprises took part in the forum.
On 22 February Izhevsk State Technical University celebrated its 60th anniversary.
After the approval of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Government of the Russian Federation, Izhevsk State Technical University was named after Mikhail Kalashnikov, a legendary designer of small arms, and is currently called Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University.
Boris Anatolyevich Yakimovich, DSc, Professor, was re-elected the Rector of Kalashnikov ISTU.
Two new lecture rooms were opened in the academic-laboratory building No 5 of Kalashnikov ISTU with the support of OJSC “Interregional Transit Telecom”, CJSC “Rossi-Telecom” and OJSC “Mobile Tele Systems”.
Institute of Modern Technologies in Mechanical & Automotive Engineering and Metallurgy was established on the basis of the Faculty of Advanced Technologies and Automobiles.
Tikhonov Institute of Physical Training and Sports was established on the basis of the Faculty of Sports. The institute is named after the fourfold Olympic biathlon champion Alexander Tikhonov.
On 30 January the new swimming pool of Kalashnikov ISTU was opened. It was constructed in the framework of the project of the party “Edinaya Rossia” (United Russia) “500 swimming pools”.
On 18 June the International Collective Research Center “Center of Surface Processing Technologies” was solemnly opened at Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University together with HTW Aalen, Zeh GmbH, Stuttgart and MKV GmbH, Allersberg (Germany). It is targeted at the theoretical and practical training of students and retraining of people from industry specializing in galvanization and implements advanced environmentally friendly technologies
